Morton and Dundee FC have had mirror opposite seasons. Dundee secured only two wins in the first quarter and briefly occupied the bottom rung, but have found their way since and are now in third place. Morton surprised everyone by holding the top position for several weeks in September, but are now in the lower half of the table. It's as if this year's First Division were a game of Snakes and Ladders!

Round Five of the Emperor's Cup was played on Christmas Eve. The winners were: FC Tokyo, Kyoto Purple Sanga, Cerezo Osaka, Yokohama F. Marinos. Yokohama were 5th in J1 this year, Osaka 12th. FC Tokyo finished 1st in J2 and were promoted. Kyoto were 7th in J2. The semifinals take place on the 29th and the final on New Year's Day.
