Emperor's Cup Final

Round Four of the Battle of Kawanakajima, 1561.

The last rounds of the Emperor's Cup happen in quick succession. The round of 16 was December 15. Quarterfinals were December 23. Semifinals December 29. Today is the final and deciding game between Gamba Osaka and Kashiwa Reysol.

Gamba Osaka won the Emperor's Cup in 1990 when they were an amateur squad playing under the name Matsushita. They won again in 2008 and 2009. They had a lacklustre season in J1, culminating in a 17th-place finish and relegation to J2 for the 2013 season. They finished last in their AFC Champions League group behind third-place Pohang Steelers. They eliminated Mito HollyHock in Round Three.

Kashiwa Reysol won the Emperor's Cup in 1972 and 1975 as Hitachi SC. They were 6th-place finishers in J1 this year.
