A Clyde puffer is a small steam- or diesel-powered cargo vessel with a flat bottom and a large hold, used for supplying the isolated villages of the Hebrides. In this day and age most of them have moved into film and television production, and have played Para Handy's Vital Spark at one time or another.
Today Dumbarton FC kick off the new year by crossing to Greenock to play the Ton.
This is the beginning of the second half of the season, although every club's eighteenth match seems to have been scheduled into the second half, plus some matches have been deferred for cup competition and bad weather. Dumbarton have only played 14 league matches to date. But today is their third meeting with the Ton. Morton have won both previous matches, with a combined score of 8 goals for and 1 against.
In the second quarter Morton recorded five wins, two draws and one loss, and at 35 points they sit first in the division. Partick are two points behind them but have a game in hand and a better goal difference. But a date with the Sons is practically a guaranteed three points, so Morton ought to hang onto first for this week at least.
But Dumbarton won at Falkirk on Wednesday, so perhaps they too have discovered the vital spark.
[Ouch! Dumbarton win 3 - 0.]
