Is there a better-designed series than Sayonara, Zetsubou-Sensei? Text and image work together beautifully in both manga and anime versions. The manga is heavily influenced by the style of early Japanese film credits, and the anime runs wild from there, to a heavy-metal soundtrack. You don't have to get every literary, political or baseball reference in this satire to understand that it's Japanese culture that's squirming on the skewer. Kodansha site. StarChild site.
