Why is Greenock Morton Football Club called Greenock Morton Football Club? Well, it's in Greenock and it's a football club, but the Morton part might come from this terrace on Belville Street. In the 1870s as football was taking off there was a multiplicity of Greenock clubs, and in order to differentiate theirs from the others the directors named it after their digs, the Morton Terrace. Perhaps. Anyway, the Morton Terrace still exists and looks like this today, poorer in railings and chimney stacks and slightly abbreviated at the near end where that bloke is sitting:
Today Morton host Raith Rovers in their final meeting of 2010-2011. To date Raith have won two and there's been a tie. Thanks in part to Dundee's 25-point deduction the Rovers look like good candidates for promotion to the Premier League.
Which raises the question: which has the more illustrious history, Morton or Raith?

On an unrelated note, Queen of the South is searching for about 100 lost shareholders. If your great-grandfather came from Dumfries you might be one of them.
[Morton nil, Raith Rovers nil.]
