Efter we cheer oor Accies we'll awa tae Equi's.
Morton visit New Douglas Park to play Hamilton Academical this afternoon.
The Accies were relegated from the SPL at the end of the 2010-11 season, and finished the 2011-12 First Division in fourth place. So far this year they have beaten Bolton and lost to Motherwell in friendlies, beaten Annan in the League Cup but lost to Airdrie in the Challenge Cup. Last Saturday they lost to Raith Rovers.
Morton's Mark McLaughlin played for the Accies last season.
The Morton fans agree: Tuesday's loss to Queen of the South was a terrible game by the home team. Add to that the vandalism at Cappielow, and Rutkiewicz's claim that a Greenock supporter hurled an anti-Polish slur at him and it's business as usual beside the Clyde. But wait! Morton have re-signed Fouad Bachirou!
There are 42 clubs in the SPL and SFL altogether, divided into the 12-team SPL and three 10-team SFL divisions. What if the 42 were sorted into three 14-team divisions? That concept was bounced around this summer during the Rangers Panic. Had it been instituted in time for this season it would have reduced Rangers' exile from the SPL by one year potentially, but now that the newco has started in the Third Division the moment has passed. Still, it's an interesting idea. A 14-team structure would require each club to play each divisional opponent three times, twice at home and once away, or once at home and twice away, for a 39-game schedule. It's that asymmetry of home and away games that's the drawback. Yet it was the format of Division One from 1975-76 until 1985-86 and Division Two from 1975-76 until 1993-94. In today's context it would mean another league fixture for each SPL club and three more for each SFL club.
It's the first day of league play in the English Premier League. This year the EPL has two teams that dress like Greenock Morton in blue and white hoops: Queen's Park Rangers and Reading FC. [QPR lose by 5 to Swansea. Reading tie Stoke.]
Yesterday evening UDC welcomed Cork City [and won 3 - 1!] Mito host Oita tomorrow, Pohang Daegu.
[Hamilton 1 - 1 Morton. Morton goal by O'Brien. Red card for Tidser! Airdrie (!) replace Dunfermline at the top of the division. Rangers move to the top of the Third Division, East Stirlingshire to the bottom.]
