Today Morton visit Dumbarton Football Stadium in the shadow of Dumbarton Rock to play Dumbarton FC, the Sons of the Rock. Though these two clubs have met frequently in cup competition in recent years, prior to this season they had not played a league game since 2005-06, when both were in the Second Division. The last time they were together in the First Division was 1995-96.
Dumbarton Rock was once the capital of the North Britons, back in the 8th century, before the Picts, Scots and Vikings squeezed them out. "Dumbarton" means the hill fort of the Britons. An alternate name was Alt Clut, the rock of the Clyde. In a perfect world there would be a Dumbarton newsgroup called alt.alt.clut.clyde.
Dumbarton Football Stadium has a capacity of 2025, making it the smallest stadium in the First Division. Should Dumbarton win the division, their facility is far below the 6000 seat minimum required for promotion to the SPL.
Dumbarton will not win the division, and by general concensus they are the worst First Division club in memory. But they've fired their manager and last weekend they gained their first First Division win of the season, beating Cowdenbeath 1 - 0. And they're also still in the Scottish Cup.
Dumbarton's Andy Graham and Ross Forsyth played for Morton last year.
That loss last weekend against Hamilton has left Morton hanging onto third place by one goal. Fourth-place Raith are up against Dunfermline today. So this is an opportunity for the Ton to gain some breathing space, at least in the goal difference column.
If Morton finish the season in second place that might be enough to earn promotion, the way things are going with Heart of Midlothian.
Last night Hamilton beat Partick 1 - 0, and jumped from 9th to 7th. Partick are mortal, and the Accies aren't dead yet.
[Morton win 5 - 1. Goals by Hardie (2), Weatherson (2) and Graham.]
The season is over for Mito HollyHock. They finished 13th out of 22 in the J-2 with 56 points and a -2 goal difference, which is an improvement over last season when they finished 17th.
Today Pohang Steelers host Jeonbuk. [Pohang win 3 - 2.]
