On this day ninety years ago, an earthquake struck the Kanto region of Japan, destroying Tokyo and surrounding cities. The death toll from the tremor and subsequent fires was 142,800, including 38,000 who were trapped in the firestorm in Yokoamicho Park. Close to half a million houses were destroyed.
