The octroi mentioned on Bécassine Mobilisée, page 20, was a municipal revenue office staffed by men in uniforms and caps who collected duties on certain commodities moving in and out of town. As you can tell from this picture they were little pains in the arse who thought pretty highly of themselves. Source.
