Concert violinist Henri Temianka was born in Rue End Street in Greenock in 1906. He made a career in the US, and by the 1940s was so well-connected in musical and diplomatic circles that he was able to spring his parents from concentration camps in France and Spain. Source. Listen.
Morton host St Mirren in a rare midweek afternoon game. The game has been selected for broadcast by BBC Alba.
St Mirren are number one in the division, five points up on Dundee United. It's a remarkable turnaround from last season, when they avoided relegation by the skin of their teeth.
Morton are fifth.
Morton won their first meeting with St Mirren and the second was a draw. If Morton win today it will be the first time since 1997-98 that they have beaten St Mirren twice in a season, even adding in the Renfrewshire Cup.
1933-34. Morton played a New Year's Day fixture against Dundee United at Cappielow and won 4 - 3.
1944-45. The schedule-maker really took advantage of the 1945 New Year. Morton hosted St Mirren in a New Year's Day Renfrewshire derby and won 3 - 0. Then, the next day, Morton played host to Albion Rovers and won 3 - 0 again.

[1 - 1. Whew, it looked like a St Mirren win for most of the game. Morton goal by O'Ware.
Other match of the day: Inverness CT vs Livingston. With a win ICT can establish themselves in the midtable and begin their challenge for a playoff spot. [Also 1 - 1.]
Special Investigation: Tidal Influence. Cappielow is just across the road from the Clyde estuary. Does the tidal ebb and flow have any influence on goalscoring?
No. Of course not. What an idea.
Although...
During Morton's 4 - 1 victory over St Mirren on August 12th, high tide occurred at 4:30 pm, or about the 75th minute of play. On that day Robert McHugh scored at 72 minutes, and Andy Murdoch scored at 77 minutes.
So you tell me.
How many games have St Mirren played against the other 2017-18 Championship clubs?

Morton 202
Dundee Utd 156
Dunfermline 116
Dumbarton 103

North Ayrshire is the council area immediately downstream from Inverclyde, and corresponds pretty closely to the ancient thanedom of Cunningham, whose name might mean "King's Home" if it comes from Northumbrian, or "Milk Bucket Town" if it's from the Gaelic.
Irvine is the largest town in North Ayrshire, with a population about 3/4 the size of Greenock's. It's a former royal burgh and seaport, with the usual castles and whatnot that go along with being a Scottish place of note -- the Linlithgow of the West you might say -- but we've never before given the town a thought here at Plenty of Nothing because it has no senior football club. But Irvine does have two rival junior clubs, Victoria and Meadow, which play at Victoria and Meadow Parks respectively. As the town of Irvine is larger than Brechin, Elgin, Peterhead, Dingwall, Methil, Dumbarton, Stranraer, Annan, Berwick or Cowdenbeath it's not too hard to imagine that an Irvine team could fit into the SPFL.
How do you pronounce Irvine? Irvin.
