In 1874 Elizabeth Thompson (later styled Lady Butler) established her reputation as a painter of British army battle scenes when her canvas The Roll Call was purchased by Queen Victoria. This meant publicity stills, but you can tell she was not at all happy about having her picture taken. Several shots have come down from this studio session, and they're all painful. See.
