Demolition of Moxham Castle

Demolition of Moxham Castle, Sydney Nova Scotia, 1966. The mansion was built in 1890 in Lorain, Ohio by steel magnate A. J. Moxham, and then dismantled and moved to Sydney in 1898 when he took charge of the Sydney steel plant. But the Moxhams abandoned the house in 1902 when their son was killed in an accident at the plant.  Source. See also.

Gaulish Words in Dioscorides

Below is a list of Gaulish words found in Dioscorides, De Materia Medica (trans. Osbaldeston and Wood, 2000). De Materia Medica is a compendium of plants, animals and minerals and their medicinal uses, compiled by Pedanius Dioscorides around 60 AD. He identifies each plant by its Greek name, but often gives a number of alternate names, usually in Greek or Latin, but sometimes in Egyptian, Syrian, Dacian, Gaulish, etc.

Each Gaulish word is followed by the book and chapter number where it appears, the chapter heading (a Greek name in Latin all-caps), the Linnaean or other taxonomical name as suggested by Osbaldeston and Wood, and a common English name. I have only listed the words that Dioscorides specifically credits to the Gauls; there could be other Gaulish words attached to phrases like 'some others call it'. Because Dioscorides credits the Latin phrase piper apum (bees' pepper) to the Gauls I have included it in the list.

Tohoku Free Blades host Red Eagles Hokkaido, who are the rebranded Oji Eagles. They still play at Hackucho Arena in Tomakomai, but they are no longer a branch of Oji Paper Company. You can see all the Oji Eagles statistics here.

Now that the Eagles and Cranes have both rebranded, Nikkō Ice Bucks (created 1999) are the old man of the Japanese professional teams.

Red Eagles enter this game in first place, and Tohoku are second.

Inverness Caledonian Thistle host Morton. Inverness are top of the division with 19 points. Morton are ninth with 6.

ICT have lead the Championship since Week Four. If Morton win today it'll be their first win against a division leader since they beat Ross County on January 4th, 2019.

Caley Thistle's only loss in league play came two weeks ago at the hands of Hamilton Academical. Morton's only win of the season was against those same Accies.

Both clubs were winners in the Challenge Cup last weekend. Morton beat Montrose, and ICT eliminated Elgin City.

Michael Gardyne of Caley Thistle played for Morton in 2007. ICT's Wallace Duffy was loaned by St Johnstone to Morton in 2020, but the deal was cancelled before he ever kicked a ball. No one on the current Morton roster has played for ICT.

Coming into today's games there are no rearranged fixtures pending in any of the four SPFL divisions, which seems unusual, but the same thing was true at this time in 2019.

The 57th Shakaijin Cup was to have been played this week but was cancelled due to Covid in the host prefecture of Tochigi. (See the Japanese state of emergency map here.) Normally this tournament is used to determine the tenth and eleventh participants in the Regional Champions League in November. Now the soccer powers that be will rely on second- and third-place regional teams and the list of 100-Year Status clubs to fill in the vacancies.

Frisk Asker versus GKS Jastrzębie

Frisk Asker host GKS Jastrzębie. This is Jastrzębie's first season in the Champions Hockey League.

GKS stands for Górniczy Klub Sportowy, or Miners' Sports Club. Most clubs in the Polish 1 Liga are located in mineral-rich Silesia, and two other clubs bear the GKS prefix. It's a good illustration of the longstanding connection between hockey and mining, something that goes back to the very first champions of the earliest professional hockey league, the Calumet Miners of the International Professional Hockey League.

This is the sixth and final group stage game for both clubs, neither of which can advance to the Round of 16.
