Two years ago we followed Tilburg Trappers through the Oberliga Nord season, until Covid brought that to a stop. This year let's follow SC Riessersee of the Oberliga Süd and cross our fingers.
The Oberliga was originally the top German hockey league, but it has since been shuffled down to tier three. It's divided into North and South divisions of 14 and 12 teams each. The South (Süd) Division covers Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, but currently all the teams in it are from Bavaria.
SC Riessersee was founded in 1923, making the club one year older than the Boston Bruins. The club's home is Garmisch-Partenkirchen, a resort town in the Bavarian Alps. Riessersee play at the Garmisch Olympia Stadium, built in 1935 for the Winter Olympics, with accommodation for 6,929 fans. Riessersee is the name of the lake on which the team played before they moved indoors. They wear blue.
Today they visit 1. EV Weiden, a.k.a. the Blue Devils. They also wear blue. Their rink is the Hans-Schröpf-Arena which cost 25 million Deutschemarks in 1985 and can contain 2,560 hockey fans. Weiden is a glass and ceramics manufacturing town a short drive from the Czech border. Most of the teams of the Oberliga Süd are to be found near the Austrian and Czech borders, the big city teams in the middle of Bavaria being in the DEL or DEL2.
Riessersee have a Canadian defenceman, Alexandre Perron-Fontaine, who once played for the Pembroke Lumber Kings. Weiden have a Canadian defenceman, Jeremy Lucchini, who once played for the Trail Smoke Eaters.
Weiden are currently top of the Oberliga Süd. Riesersee are eighth.
