Born in Algeria in 1901, Marthe Simard emigrated to Quebec in 1932. With the German occupation of France in 1940 she began to organize in Quebec on behalf of the Free French cause, and in 1943 returned to Algeria as a member of the Assemblée consultative provisoire, representing the overseas French Resistance. When the Assembly relocated to Paris in November 1944 Simard became one of the first six women to sit in a French legislature. She was awarded the Legion of Honour in 1946.
