What Guelph United look like. Source.
It's the Canadian Championship, Round One. HFX Wanderers visit Guelph United, champions of League1 Ontario. The winner of this match will face Toronto FC in the next round.
Guelph United play at the University of Guelph's Alumni Stadium. The place seats 8,500, but was temporarily expanded to 13,362 in 2013 when the Hamilton Ticats were in residence. Guelph United and University of Guelph Gryphons don't just share a stadium, their rosters overlap too. I count ten players who are on both the 2021-22 Guelph Gryphons and the 2022 Guelph United squads. This works because League1 Ontario runs from April to August while university soccer runs from September to November.
HFX Wanderers' Colin Gander played for Guelph United last year. Tomasz Skublak (HFX Wanderers, 2019) plays for Guelph United this year.
[HFX Wanderers have signed forward Mour Samb to help fill the Morelli gap. Also, Kareem Sow is back with the team after have played with the University of Montreal Carabins last fall.]
13 teams are competing for the Canadian Championship. There should be 15 next year, once the CPL's Langley team and League1 BC come on stream, assuming FC Edmonton are still around at that time.
Match 1: Vancouver Whitecaps [2 - 0] Valour FC (tomorrow)
Vancouver Whitecaps lost to Cavalry in 2019 and to Pacific in 2021.
