Hugh Pattison Macmillan (1873 - 1952) was born in Glasgow but spent his school days in Greenock. His family lived at 70 Union Street, just up the road from the Tontine Hotel. He studied law and made a career of it, and was appointed Law Lord in 1930. He was the legal representative of Canada and Australia in London, and was in on Canada v Newfoundland 1927, the case that decided the ownership of Labrador (which went in Newfoundland's favour). For a short time during World War Two he was head of the Ministry of Information, the British government's propaganda wing and the model for Orwell's Ministry of Truth. He's buried in Kenmore, Perth and Kinross. Source.
Morton host Ayr United. Ayr are first in the division with 11 points, on 3 wins, 2 draws and no losses. Morton are fourth with 8 points. Ayr are the only unbeaten team in the Championship. Morton have the best defensive record, with only 3 goals allowed. (See A below.) But they have only scored 4. (See B below.) Ayr's Dipo Akinyemi has six goals himself. So far this season Morton have knocked Cove Rangers and Dundee out of first place. Today's game is an opportunity to do Ayr the same favour. Morton will move into top position if they beat Ayr by 2 goals and both Arbroath and Dundee win.
Like Dundee Ayr are a yo-yo club, except that The Honest Men yo-yo between tiers II and III. Since 1994 Ayr United have been promoted to this division five times.
Morton and Ayr will meet again in three weeks in Round Three of the Challenge Cup.
Ayr United are managed by Lee Bullen, who has held the post since January 7th. Dougie Imrie took on the Morton job less than a year ago, but already he is 23rd in seniority in the SPFL. He has been manager longer than six of his Championship rivals.
Michael Garrity has been loaned out to Dumbarton, and Reece Lyon has been loaned to Annan.
It's early days, but I'm calling it now. Dundee United will be in the 2023-24 Championship. Proof.

Our guys Iwaki FC are in first place in J3, but they don't have a J2 license, probably because their stadium only seats 5,000, so they can't be promoted. The same thing happened to Blaublitz Akita in 2017.

League Cup, Round Two, first leg. I may have been at this game. I had absolutely no appreciation of the sport at the time, and my takeaway was that nothing had happened on the pitch but the action in the cowshed was nonstop.
