Both these clubs arose in the area south of Glasgow where the Maxwell family had been landowners for several centuries. Maxwell FC were from Pollokshields, and Sir John Maxwell FC were from Pollokshaws, an important distinction; Maxwell FC played in the Glasgow and suburbs stream of Scottish Cup competition, while Sir John Maxwell FC played in the Renfrewshire stream.

Sir John Maxwell FC was named after Sir John Maxwell (1791-1865), 8th Baronet of Pollok. In 1884 the club merged with Pollok FC to form Pollokshaws FC.
