It's the Scottish Challenge Cup, Round Three. Morton visit Cowdenbeath at the Central Park Speedway.
This round of 32 includes the ten Championship clubs, ten League One clubs, seven from League Two, two from the Lowland League, one from the Highland League and two colt teams.
Morton have never won the Challenge Cup. They reached the final once, in 1992-93, and the semi-finals six times, most recently in 2008-09. They went five straight years without a win in the second half of the last decade.
Cowdenbeath have played in the Lowland League since being relegated from the SPFL in 2022. They are currently fourteenth in the table. Their involvement in this year's Challenge Cup is seen in some quarters as a reward for having voted for the Premiership colt teams. They too have never won this cup.
Morton last played the Blue Brazil on March 25th, 2014 and lost 3 - 0 at Central Park. That was Morton's relegation year. The last Morton player to score against Cowden was Archie Campbell, February 15th, 2014. The first match I know of between Morton and Cowdenbeath was a Division One match played September 13, 1924 (100 years ago next week) which Cowdenbeath won 5 - 0.
Cowdenbeath have been in this year's tournament since Round One. They beat Kilmarnock colts and Albion Rovers to get this far.
Morton have not won a match since July 27th.
[But Morton win today, 0 - 1 on a goal by Garrity. Each team earned a red card.]
