It's the playoffs. Detroit visit the Rangers.
In 1941 six of seven teams made it to the postseason. Teams 3, 4, 5 and 6 contested the quarterfinals while teams 1 (Bruins) and 2 (Leafs) sat out. In the present day team 3 would then play team 6, and team 4 team 5. But in 1941 team 3 (Detroit) played team 4 (Rangers), and team 5 (Chicago) played team 6 (Montreal), which guaranteed that a better team would go out and a worse team advance. The two quarter-finals were best of three. The semi-final between the quarter-final winners was also best of three. But the semi-final between teams 1 and 2 was best of seven. This playoff system was in place from 1937-38 till 1941-42.
Today's game was Game Two of the Detroit/Rangers quarter-final. Detroit had won the first one.
1st period: Babe Pratt scored for the Rangers.
2nd period: Dan Grosso scored for the Red Wings, and Alex Shibicky answered for New York.
3rd period: Max Colville scored for the Rangers. New York won and sent the series back to Detroit for the third and final game.
