The 2023-24 Championship begins, the 30th season of this ten-team tier-two league. This year's Championship shares seven members with last year's. It also closely resembles the 2009-10 edition, which had ICT, Dunfermline, Partick Thistle, Raith Rovers, Morton, Airdrie and Ayr in it. In contrast is the 2014-15 Championship which had only Raith Rovers in common.
This is Morton's ninth straight season in the Championship, their longest run in any division since 1963-64. Their longest run in any division ever still stands at 27 years (1900-01 to 1926-27) in the old Division One. Nine straight seasons makes Morton the longest current tenant (see A below) and puts Morton joint second in the list of longest runs in tier II since the four divisions came in (see B below). Morton is also the club that has spent the most years all told in tier II since 1994 (see C below).
See D below for the whereabouts of each 2023-24 Championship club since 1994.
2024 will be Morton's 150th anniversary.
Morton host Ayr United. Last season these two finished with almost identical records, though Ayr had an 8-goal edge in scoring thanks to Dipo Akinyemi, who, luckily, has moved on to York City. Ayr enter their sixth straight season in the Championship. Since 1994 they have spent 17 years in tier II and 13 in tier III.
Lawrence Shankland, who has played for both Morton and Ayr, was third in scoring in the Premiership last season, with 24 goals for Hearts.
Ayr won their group in the League Cup, with 11 points and a +8 goal difference.
Have Morton and Ayr ever started the league against each other before? Yes:
2019/8/3 Ayr United 4 - 2 Morton
2014/8/9 Ayr United 1 - 0 Morton
1997/8/2 Ayr United 1 - 2 Morton
1971/9/4 Ayr United 1 - 0 Morton
1939/10/21 Ayr United 0 - 1 Morton
1930/8/9 Ayr United 2 - 2 Morton
1920/8/18 Ayr United 0 - 2 Morton
Three wins and a draw each, all at Somerset Park. Today is the first time Ayr and Morton have started the league at Cappielow.
Morton have signed goalkeeper Jamie MacDonald, formerly of Hearts, Queen of the South, Falkirk, Kilmarnock, Alloa and Raith Rovers. Also Irish midfielder Alan Power who has played for Nottingham Forest, Grays Athletic of the Isthmian League, Hartlepool United, Rushden & Diamonds, Lincoln City, Kilmarnock and St Mirren. Michael Garrity is being loaned out to Annan Athletic.
Today's starting XI is: [MacDonald, O'Connor, Waters, Boyd, Muirhead, Quitongo, Crawford, Broadfoot, McGrattan, Gillespie, Oakley.]
Compare last year: Schwake, Pignatiello, Strapp, O'Connor, Baird, Kabia, Blues, Muirhead, Quitongo, Gillespie, Lyon.
Here's a pleasing sign of continuity. The most recent Morton scorer against each of the 2022-23 Championship clubs is still with Morton: Jack Baird (Partick), Robbie Crawford (Queen's Park), Grant Gillespie (ICT), Alexander King (Raith Rovers and Hamilton Accies), Robbie Muirhead (Cove Rangers and Dundee), George Oakley (Arbroath) and Calum Waters (Ayr United).
