Fuzzy Yellow Caterpillar

This is a member of the species Acronicta americana, an American Dagger Moth, in its caterpillar stage. We have had very few butterflies in the yard this summer of 2009 in Ottawa, probably because of the wet weather, but we'll be able to count on at least one big moth pounding on the kitchen window this fall.

During the months of June, July, August and September "fuzzy yellow caterpillar" searches make up a significant percentage of the hits on this blog. This year I am going to try to define the territory of the American Dagger Moth caterpillar by daily reporting the location of the computers from which these hits originate. It's only a rough estimate, because not all computers reveal their location, people often search more than once, it excludes Quebec and Mexico because it misses anyone searching in French or Spanish, and because there is undoubtedly more than one species of fuzzy yellow caterpillar. This seems like a good place to stop. I don't know what value these stats hold for entomologists. They are less a measure of the range and life cycle of the American dagger moth caterpillar than of people with computers searching on the term "fuzzy yellow caterpillar" or "yellow caterpillar" or "fuzzy caterpillar" or maybe even "fuzzy yellow slippers". But they do give you a sense of when the species is crawling around New England, for example.

Neither Michigan nor Ontario has an official insect. Yet both places are important territories of the American dagger moth's fuzzy yellow caterpillar. How about it, lawmakers?

[May 2013] People googling from Singapore or the UK have very probably seen a different fuzzy yellow caterpillar than the American dagger moth.

Plenty of Nothing stats clearly show the July to October fuzzy yellow caterpillar season.

[July 31, 2014. Searches for "fuzzy yellow caterpillar" are way up this year. The yellow bar for Jul14 is 2.1 K, a little higher than Aug13 or Sep13. If you treat the bottom 1K of each bar as normal background noise, there were about 400 "fuzzy yellow caterpillar" hits in Jul13 versus 1100 in Jul14.]

2013 Emperor's Cup Final

Yokohama F Marinos and Sanfrecce Hiroshima meet today in the final game of the 2013 Emperor's Cup. Unlike 2011 when both finalists came from second flight J2, this final brings together the top two clubs in the land. Hiroshima finished the J1 season in first, one point ahead of Yokohama, but Yokohama won both meetings between the two clubs. Yokohama's Shunsuke Nakamara was selected Player of the Year.

League play resumes in March. Note that although it is a much warmer country than Scotland, Japan plays soccer in July and takes January off.
