This was the first game of the 1941 Stanley Cup finals between first-place Boston and third-place Detroit.

1st period: Goal by Eddie Wiseman (Bruins).

2nd period: Milt Schmidt (Bruins).

3rd period: Pat McReavy (Bruins), Carl Liscombe (Red Wings), Syd Howe (Red Wings). Boston won 3 - 2. The Bruins went on to win the series four game to none.

This was the era when the O'Brien Trophy was still being handed out. It was originally the championship trophy of the NHA (you can't call it a cup because it wasn't cup-shaped), but it went out of use when the owners dissolved that league and created the NHL. It was revived in 1921 as the NHL's championship trophy. In those days the NHL champion had to play the PCHA champion for the Stanley Cup. Once the NHL got exclusive control of the Stanley Cup, the O'Brien Trophy became the prize for winning the Canadian Division, and once the NHL shrank to one division it was given to the Stanley Cup loser, which is how Detroit got it in 1941.

Morton visit Falkirk. Falkirk are top of the division with 66 points and are within a couple of games of securing promotion. Morton are sixth with 41 points and headed for a fifth- or sixth-place finish. The Bairns have won all three encounters with Morton this season.

Which teams have beaten Falkirk this season? Stenhousemuir (!) (cup), Celtic (cup), Raith Rovers (cup and league), Ayr United (cup and league), Livingston (3 times in the league).

Falkirk were in League One last year, and will probably be in the Premiership next year. They have not been in the top division since 2009-10 and have never lost the attitude that they're just slumming in these lower leagues. The 2022-23 Secret Dream Gap Tour

In 2022-23 the Professional Women's Hockey Player Association staged a travelling exhibition tournament named the Secret Dream Gap Tour (after their deodorant sponsor) with games in Eastern Canada and the US. There were four teams, each named after a corporate sponsor: Team Adidas (after the shoemaker), Team Harvey's (after the restaurant chain), Team Scotiabank (after the Canadian bank), and Team Sonnet (after an insurance company).

The tournament took the form of a series of showcases with breaks to release the players to their national teams for the Canada vs US Series.

The 2022-23 Secret Dream Gap Tour was the immediate precursor of the 2024 PWHL and helped work out the logistics of operating a pro league. But perhaps because it was an exhibition series it's not that well documented. The game results listed below have been cobbled together from a variety of sources.

It's the semi-finals. The Red Wings visit the Black Hawks for Game Two of their best-of-three series. Detroit won the first game 3 - 1 on March 27th.

1st period: no scoring.

2nd period: Goals by Alex Motter (Detroit) and Doug Bentley (Chicago).

3rd period: no scoring.

Overtime: Gus Giesebrecht scored the winner for Detroit.

The Red Wings won the series in two games. The other semi-final, between Boston and Toronto, went to seven games. What an absurd format. On the one hand it allowed the quarter-final and B semi-final to be played in the same span of time as the A semi-final, but on the other hand it guaranteed that the two best teams would not meet in the Stanley Cup final.

Doug Bentley was another Saskatchewan product, and another brother of a teammate (Max). He played in Saskatoon, Regina, Moose Jaw and Drumheller before joining the Black Hawks in 1939, and was twelve seasons with Chicago, from 1939-40 to 1951-52. He carried on playing in the WHL through the Fifties and didn't hang up his skates until 1962.

Bonar Law

Andrew Bonar Law was born in Kingston, New Brunswick and spent a portion of his youth in Helensburgh across the Clyde from Greenock. He was British Prime Minister in 1922-23, longer than Liz Truss but not as long as Rishi Sunak. Source.
